Snowy Mountains

Environmentalist

The Snowy Mountains are part of a complex mountain range known as the Australian Alps that starts at the top end of New South Wales near Queensland and runs all the way down to the bottom near Victoria. The Snowy Mountain region contains the five tallest mountains in Australia.

It is wonderful natural environment that is home to a huge amount of flora and fauna. Humans have created some built features that allow humans to use the Snowy Mountains without causing much damage.

Significance

The Snowy Mountains are a significant Australian environment. The Snowy Mountains include the five tallest mountains in Australia, the highest is Mount Kosciuszko reaching 2,228 metres.

The Snowy Mountains are the only true alpine environment in Australia. This means they are the only environment that reaches high enough to be considered above the trees. As it is the only alpine area, it makes it the only area in Australia for snow sports such as skiing, snowboarding and many more.

The Snowy Mountains are doing more than just looking beautiful and being the place for some fun activities. The Snowy Mountains are providing water for the Snowy Scheme which is storing water to reduce the effects of droughts and provide Eastern Australia clean and renewable energy. The Snowy scheme is a significant scheme for Australia and was added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2016.

Why is this environment significant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

Every Summer, for thousands of years, Aboriginal people crossed tribal boundaries and travelled hundreds of kilometres to meet on the top of the mountains of the Snowy Mountains region. They all came to one place for marriages, trading, celebrations, initiation of young men and to even settle arguments.

During this time, the Aboriginal tribes had a time of feasting, particularly on the Bogong moth.

Today, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play an important role in managing and protecting the environment and their heritage of the high country.

Issues

The Snowy Mountain area is of high importance due to is large amount of native flora and fauna, many are endangered. Over 1.5 million people visit the Snowy Mountains every year. Activities that are bringing the tourists such as snow sports, bush walking, camping, mountain bike riding and many more can actually have bad effects on the environment.

Humans have built features to try and protect the environment but this isn't stopping all negative effects. Research has shown that tourist activities (especially snow sports) have been impacting the environment in a bad way. There has been a large impact on the native flora and fauna of the environment.

Caring for the environment

As a country, to care for the Snowy Mountains we need to do many things.

We can help reduce pollution rates. To do this we can walk or ride our bikes to school. Catching a bus will help too! By having less cars on the roads we can help reduce pollution levels.

When we visit the Snowy Mountains we can help protect it! By making sure we do not throw any rubbish in the National park we can keep the environment clean. This means no poor wildlife will get stuck in or eat our rubbish.

When visiting the Snowy Mountains you can respect the area and understand the built features put into place in order to protect and care for the environment. For example, walking on the track when bush walking to keep all the damage caused by walking to the one spot.
