Uluru, also known as Kata Tjuta, is in the centre of Australia surrounded by an arid desert. An arid environment has little or no rain and is too dry for any plants to grow.

Summer

When travelling to Uluru in Summer it is important to remember that it is going to be very hot and dusty. Wearing cool clothes that can cover some of your body is best. This will protect you from the large amount of dust and protect your skin from being burnt by the sun.

 

To protect yourself from the sun, it is also important to wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and sun screen when outside.

Activities around Uluru involve a large amount of walking. It is important to wear good walking shoes to be comfortable and protect your feet.

​

The days may be warm but the nights can get cool. Don't forget a jumper for warmth at night, especially if you are camping!

Winter

When travelling to Uluru in Winter the days are still very warm, but the nights can get down to 1 degrees. Cool and light clothing, similar to Summer is important for the days. Warm clothing such as tracksuit pants, jumpers and beanies are needed for the nights.

Winter is still very warm and the sun is out. It is still important to protect yourself from the sun with sun screen, sunglasses and a hat.

Similar to Summer, Winter activities around Uluru will involve a lot of walking. It is important to have good walking shoes that are comfortable and protect your feet.

When to visit

The best time to visit Uluru is in Winter. This is because the weather is cooler which makes it easier to explore the area walking. It is also safer and less chance of being burnt by the sun.

Winter also creates the best colours in the desert. During this time the colour of Uluru is more vibrant and bright.

You are also more likely to find hidden waterfalls and sneaky animals during Winter.
