The Snowy Mountains is an area that contains the highest mountains in Australia. The Snowy Mountains are an alpine climate which is unusual for Australia. An alpine climate is an environment that is so high up that trees are not able to grow. In an alpine environment the air is described as cool and crisp.

Summer

When travelling to the Snowy Mountains in Summer it is important to wear cool clothes as the days can be quite hot. Always be prepared and have a jumper or waterproof jacket with you as the weather can be very unpredictable. Some warmer clothing will be needed at night time.

To protect yourself from the sun, it is important to wear a wide brimmed hat and sun screen when outside.

​

There are many activities to do around the Snowy Mountains in Summer. Many involve being very active, make sure you take a comfortable pair of walking shoes with you.

Winter

When travelling to the Snowy Mountains in Winter the weather can be very unpredictable. As it is an alpine region, the weather is going to be very cold.

​

You should always have a thermal layer to stay warm, this means wearing a tight under layer top and pants under all your other clothes to keep you warm. You may decide to wear multiple thin layers as these work better than one bulky layer.

On top of the under layer you need to wear clothing that is going to help keep you dry. Waterproof and windproof pants and jacket are the best option and will help you stay dry and block the wind.

Even in Winter on a cloudy day the sun can still reach you. It is important to wear sunscreen and protect your eyes from the glare on the snow with sunglasses or goggles.

Alpine conditions such as snow and ice can make walking difficult and slippery. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and have strong grip to keep you safe.

As Australia does not experience many alpine conditions

such as snow and ice. The Snowy Mountains have many stores which offer clothing and equipment hire. This makes it easier for people to go the Snowy Mountains without spending large amounts of money on expensive clothing and equipment that is needed. Instead they are able to spend smaller amounts of money to hire any clothing or equipment that they might not have just for the time they will need it.

When to visit

The best time to visit the Snowy Mountains is in Winter. This is because they are the coldest months to visit and are more likely to have snow.
