Fun Facts

  • The name Coorong was taken from the Aboriginal name kurangh. The meaning of this word is long neck. The local aboriginal people call it Kurangh because the lagoon system resembles the shape of a long neck

  • The Coorong National Park encompasses various locations such as the Younghusband Peninsula and Coorong.

  • Goolwa Barrages was constructed in the end of 1930s. It was separated from Lake Alexandria.

  • In 1966, Coorong National Park was established.

  • The main function of the park was to protect the fish, animals and bird species which lived in the area.

  • Coorong National Park spans on the area at 467 square km.  It has coastal vegetation, lagoons and coastal dune system.

  • Coorong is famous because of the unique natural features. The groundwater and rainfall in the area is affected by the interaction between Murray River and sea water. 

  • The sea water in Coorong supports the life of the birds. The other animals are supported by the freshwater.

  • The movie Storm Boy released in 1977 was filmed in Coorong.

  • The Coorong is a place of tranquility, solitude and wonderment.

  • A place that calms the mind, soothes the soul and appeases the senses.

  • You can investigate the long, narrow lagoon that runs parallel with the coastal dunes for 140km.

  • The beach that stretches 200km from Encounter Bay to Lacepede Bay, uninterrupted except when the mouth of the great Murray River opens to the sea.

  • There is a vast wetland ecosystem that consists of ocean beach, freshwater lakes, estuaries, saline lagoon and river mouth.

  • Large amounts of flocks of birds that have travelled here from as far away as Siberia and Alaska.
