Daintree Rainforest

Tour Guide

The Daintree Rainforest is located on the North-East coast of Queensland. Take a look at the map below.

The Daintree

Rainforest

Queensland

Queensland is the second largest state in Australia. It has a population of over 4 million people. The capital of Queensland is Brisbane and most of the population of Queensland live in or near Brisbane.

What is a built feature?

The built features of a place or the built environment includes everything that has been built by humans. It is the places humans have built to be able to live, learn and work. The built environment ranges in scale from buildings to parks.

The local people

The Daintree Rainforest is owned by both the Australian government but also small areas are privately owned by Australians.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who lived in the Daintree Rainforest relied on the Rainforest and the Daintree River. They used plants and animals in both the Rainforest and the River.

The local people who live in and around the Daintree use it for all the amazing things it has to offer. Some locals own restaurants, tour companies, boat ride companies, farms, hotels, coffee plantations, wildlife centres and much more and operate from within the Daintree Rainforest.

Others enjoy many activities that can be completed in the Daintree. These include scenic walks, hikes or drives, crocodile sighting in the boat, zip lining, horse rides and visiting the beach.

These activities have resulted in many tourists coming to visit the Daintree Rainforest. The number of people visiting the Rainforest has been increasing every year. This means humans need to build and create features that will help manage the large amounts of people visiting.

Luckily the locals care for the Daintree Rainforest and have built these features in a way that will care and protect the environment.

Built Features

The Daintree Rainforest is a beautiful natural environment, for humans to enjoy it there have been items added to make it easier.

ROADS

In the early 1980's it became necessary for a road, the only problem was that it had to go through a beautiful national park that is the Daintree Rainforest. There were many arguments for and against the construction of a road. Some people thought a road would be convenient and promote tourism, others felt a road was destroying the Rainforest.

In 1984, the road was opened. The road has benefitted tourism enormously, allowing tourists to have greater access to visiting with tour companies. It is important that the Rainforest be driven with tour companies or other locals, this is because of how unstable to road is. The road was built in such a hurry that it was rushed and not built to its best quality.

The road has made sure that only one part of the rainforest (the part with the road) is used regularly. This means the rest of the Rainforest can be left untouched and protected. This did mean a large portion of the Rainforest needed to be cut down and built into a road, but it had the positive effect of controlling the damaged area to only the road.

BOARDWALK

Throughout the Daintree Rainforest there are many boardwalks. These boardwalks are a wooden path that is lifted up and not sitting on the ground. These boardwalks have been built throughout the Daintree for multiple reasons.

Firstly, they stop the damage and wearing away of the forest floor when people walk on it. These boardwalks allow people to adventure through the beautiful rainforest environment without damaging it with their feet.

Secondly, they allow access to be able to walk through. A large amount of the Daintree Rainforests floor is covered in water, mud or sand. This makes it very difficult to walk through. These boardwalks have provided the opportunity for locals and visitors to admire and enjoy the Rainforest. They also allow the opportunity for physically disabled people to access and enjoy the Daintree.

BOAT

The saltwater crocodiles lurking within the Daintree River have become one of the most popular tourist attractions for the area. The Daintree River has tour companies that will take you in their boat to see if you can spot any crocodiles. Without the use of these boats, people are unable to admire and learn about the salt water crocodiles. It is definitely not safe enough to go swimming with them!

These boats have allowed locals to take visitors out and educate them on the magnificent creatures. It has meant experienced locals can protect visitors from any silly mistakes they might make in a boat on their own.

Accommodation

There are many options for accomodation for the Daintree Rainforest. For those only wanting a basic room, you are able to get accommodation for only $50 a night in Port Douglas.

There are much more luxurious options, including in the middle of the Daintree Rainforest such as an Eco Lodge for approximately $400 a night.

Going for the more expensive option will definitely bring you other benefits. These include experiencing the Daintree Rainforest entirely by living in it, free breakfast, use of pool and WiFi.
