Daintree Rainforest

Environmentalist

The Daintree Rainforest is located on the North-East coast of Queensland. It is the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest in Australia, reaching a huge 1,200 square kilometres.

The Daintree Rainforest is extremely unique as it not only runs along the Daintree River but also grows right to the edge of the ocean. The Daintree Rainforest has been named as one of Queensland's icons for its natural beauty.

Significance

The Daintree Rainforest is a significant Australian environment. It is one of the most complex ecosystems in the world. This means that is has one of the largest amounts of plants and animals living inside the Daintree that all connected in some way.

The Daintree Rainforest has magnificent scenery, mountain ranges, rivers, waterfalls, dense forest, coastal beaches and underwater reefs just off shore.

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most natural, beautiful environments the world has to offer.

Why is this environment significant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the Traditional Owners of the Daintree Rainforest area.

The Kuku Yalanji people have lived in the Daintree Rainforest for thousands of years. The Kuku Yalanji people relied heavily on the huge amount of plants and animals for food that the Daintree had to offer.

The Daintree Rainforest was the focus area for many songs, dances and Dream time stories. The Kuku Yalanji people had a strong spiritual and cultural connection to the Daintree. They hold an incredible amount of knowledge about the Rainforest, what is has to offer and how to protect it.

Today, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are focused on protecting the Daintree Rainforest.

Issues

Unfortunately, while the Daintree Rainforest is listed as a World Heritage Site and has to be protected, the World Heritage area does not extend for the entire Daintree Rainforest. This means parts of the Rainforest are not being cared for and protected.

Deforestation is occurring. Deforestation is the cutting or burning of trees. Currently, deforestation is occurring on the South end of the Daintree so that more houses can be built. By building more houses we are destroying wildlife, their homes and their food source.

Caring for the environment

As a country, to care for the Daintree Rainforest we need to do many things.

We can help reduce pollution rates. To do this we can walk or ride our bikes to school. Catching a bus will help too! By having less cars on the roads we can help reduce pollution levels.

When we visit the Daintree Rainforest we can help protect it even more! By making sure we do not leave any rubbish in the pristine Rainforests. Making sure we do not pollute the waters that run throughout and do no feed any wildlife.

Can you think of more ways we can help protect and care for the Daintree Rainforest?

Why should getaway visit?
