Uluru

Tour Guide

Uluru, also known as Kata Tjuta, is located in the centre of Australia, in the South of the Northern Territory. Take a look at the map below.

Uluru

Northern Territory

The Northern Territory has the most areas of desert compared to all other states in Australia. Even though the Northern Territory is the third largest area in Australia, it has the least amount of people living in it. The capital city is Darwin and has most of the Northern Territory's population living there and along the coast line.

What is a built feature?

The built features of a place or the built environment includes everything that has been built by humans. It is the places humans have built to be able to live, learn and work. The built environment ranges in scale from buildings to parks.

The local people

While Uluru does not have people living on or in it, it does have many people staying or living in the desert surrounding it. While there are people living in the desert surrounding Uluru, the closest town is Alice Springs that is a 6 hour drive away. The people who live closer to Uluru most often are the people who work at any accomodations for tourists.

Uluru is a sacred Aboriginal site and has an enormous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture surrounding it. Uluru and Aboriginal culture are very much combined today.

The locals who live in the desert surrounding Uluru provide the best possible ways to appreciate the formation while also aiming to protect and care for Uluru. As Uluru is a sacred site, the Traditional Owners of the land do request you NOT to climb Uluru.

There are many exciting activities to do around Uluru. These include a scenic helicopter tour, walking the entire way around Uluru, ride a camel, star gazing, get up early to see an Uluru sunrise, visit Kings Canyon, walk the domes of Kata Tjuta, eat at the wonderful restaurants, visit the local artists workshops and museums.

These activities have resulted in many tourists coming to visit Uluru. The number of people visiting the rock formation has been increasing every year. This means humans need to build and create features that will help manage the large amounts of people visiting.

Luckily the locals care for Uluru and have built these features in a way that will care and protect the environment.

Built Features

Uluru is a beautiful natural environment, for humans to enjoy it without damaging, there have been items added to make it easier.

ROADS

Roads have been built around Uluru in order to help visitors in getting to and around the National Park. The road has helped tourism enormously, allowing tourists to have greater access to visiting Uluru alone or with tour companies.

The road has made sure that only one part of the desert (the part with the road) is used regularly. This means the rest of the desert national park can be left untouched by heavy vehicles and protected as much as possible.

WALKING TRACKS

Walking tracks and bush tracks have been formed to allow tourists and locals to be able to admire the national park at closer level. These tracks allow you to walk on foot and witness the national park, the flora and the fauna with your own senses. Similar to the road, the tracks aim to promote growth in the areas around the paths and keeping all foot damage to the area where the path is.

By creating these walking paths, it has allowed the Traditional Owners to keep their sacred sites off the tracks. This means that tourists will not be walking through their sacred and meaningful areas without permission.

CAMPING FACILITIES

Camping facilities have been added to the surrounding national park in order for visitors to comfortably enjoy their time visiting Uluru. These facilities include camp grounds, picnic areas, toilets, drinking water stations, emergency radios and car parks.

While these are aimed at visitors being comfortable, these facilities also help to protect the environment. By providing areas with bins and other environmentally friendly facilities they can reduce the amount of littering and polluting that occurs in the National Park.
